Moisturizers Print E-mail
Moisturizers are intricate mixtures of chemicals that are designed to assist oil glands in the skin that help keep it moisturized. As you get older, and in colder air, the skin tends to become dryer. Moisturizers help to combat this by adding moisture to the skin through topical application. Application of a moisturizer increases the skins hydration, making it softer and more pliable. The type of moisturizer one uses is dependent on skin type. Heavier, moisturizers are usually in a cream form and commonly contain more petroleum based ingredients and less water. Lighter moisturizers are typically lotions and contain a higher water content that evaporate more readily. Other ingredients such as humectants help deliver moisture from below the skin to where it is needed. An example of a commonly used humectant is glycerin.
