| Astringents are typically clear liquids containing primarily alcohol with other acids such as boric acid. Usually these are used to tighten and shrink pores and to bring the skin back to its normal pH after cleansing. Astringents also remove excess oil from the skin. Most over the counter astringents have a witch hazel or alcohol base and should not be used on dry skin. |
