Alpha hydroxy acids Print E-mail
Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, are commonly found in different concentrations in many products. The most commonly used alpha hydroxy acids are glycolic, lactic, malic, citric and tartaric acids. These mild acids exfoliate or strip away the outer layer of skin which is always the oldest and leave skin with a rejuvenated appearance. Some of these acid's are found in fruit sources, particularly ones in the citrus family, but also are found in apples and grapes. Others such as the widely used glycolic acid, are found in sugar cane. Lactic Acid, another AHA, can be found in milk but is also naturally found in the skin and is produced by our muscles when we work out. The most common AHA's used in skin care are Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid. All of the AHA's serve to exfoliate the skin and leave your skin with a better appearance.
